It’s another Wednesday and another photo prompt for Friday Fictioneers to tell their stories of approximately 100 words. We are hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields of Addicted to Purple. Here’s my story of 100 words this week – inspired by this photo, the heat and Leonard Cohen.

There was tension in the air. You can almost feel it crackling like tinder under a match. Her heart raced and thudded. It felt like a stallion was galloping through her chest. Any minute now. It was coming. She was sure.
The sky was grey and ominous. Enormous clouds hung over the rooftops. The telephone wires drooped heavy with crows, gathered and waiting as if for a funeral.
Where could she hide? Just then a bolt flashed across the sky. She clapped her hands over her ears as thunder rumbled and shook the walls. The rain came. She was alright.
Escape! A storm can hide a lot ☺
Feels like a metaphor as well as literally a storm. Glad the kids are alright!
Thanks, loved your comment!

Love the tension!
Thanks, Ashley!

Dear Lily,
Ominous buildup. Nicely done.

Thanks so much, Rochelle.

Great word pictures that makes one feel almost being there!
Thanks!
Lily
Great description of the tension in the air, and in her mind.
Thanks, nice to have FF to empty our troubled minds.
Lily
She saw the storm and out came a story just right for me. Mike
Not saved by the bell… But I think the thunder can hide a lot.
Great buildup of tension in the piece, Lily. I don’t know what she’s been saved from but it must be something quite frightening. — Suzanne
Thank you, Suzanne. I think she’s scared of the build up to the storm. Oh, it’s another week already! It’s hard to keep up with life. Thanks for reading.

Leonard Cohen died today. He lived a terrific life, all told. As for me, I do a little writing, like you do, and I find inspiration in different prompts which give me some enthusiasm for the craft. Although I respect your right to enjoy the music of Leonard Cohen, I question whether you should draw inspiration from his legacy in order to write flash fiction. Were he alive, he might not approve of the practice! All the same, perhaps he would be encouraging of you, if he knew. I generally feel that flash fiction is a good exercise for writers, but as it is the month of November (and, therefore, the month of NaNoWriMo), I would guardedly venture to speculate that you could now be busy getting to work this month writing a novel in thirty days. However, I am not sure you should be continuing to find comfort in the music of Leonard Cohen, now that’s he passed on. While you are free to find an emotional outlet in the music of Leonard Cohen, I encourage you to explore more music.
